Reminder: No school on Friday, February 27. This week, our school community came together to recognize Pink Shirt Day . We attended a meaningful assembly and classrooms across the school participated in activities organized by our hardworking Grade 5 Leadership Team. It was wonderful to see students take initiative and help lead conversations about kindness, inclusion, and standing up for others. We are proud of the leadership and responsibility they demonstrated! In s cience , we began our new unit on m atter . Students explored the properties of solids, liquids, and gases by acting as “molecules” around the classroom. As solids, they stayed tightly packed and vibrated in place. As liquids, they remained close together but were able to move past one another. As gases, they spread out and moved freely throughout the space.  In w riting , we are focusing on grammar, sentence structure, and note-taking. This week in Grade 5 has been a full one! In Math , we continued practicing multiplication and division using the basic algorithms. We also focused on estimating our answers to check for reasonableness. Students practiced adjusting numbers to make mental math easier and explaining their thinking! On Tuesday, we were fortunate to welcome a Calgary-based author to our school for a reading of Brave Like A Buffalo . Students listened thoughtfully and reflected on the bison's bravery in their writing. In Art , we explored the Woodland Style inspired by Anishinaabe artist Norval Morrisseau . Students created bison artwork while experimenting with the elements of art, including shape, composition, colour, and texture. We discussed how Morrisseau used bold outlines and vibrant colours to communicate connection, energy, and Anishinaabek storytelling in his work. Science In Science, students took on a hands-on engineering challenge using maker materials. Their task was to build an object that could float while holding weight. Students explored concepts of buoyancy, balance, and structure as they tested and redesigned their creations. It was exciting to see the problem-solving, collaboration, and perseverance that went into strengthening their floating designs! Physical Education In PE, we brought the Olympics to our gym! Students participated in a variety of winter Olympic sports, including speed skating, biathlon, and hockey. Reminder There is no school Thursday through Monday . I look forward to seeing everyone back and ready to learn after the break!

Here’s our recap from this week! Reminder : No school Thursday/Friday next week! In art, students participated in an art critique featuring a diverse range of artists from around the world. They practiced observing details, sharing interpretations, and respectfully responding to different perspectives. In math, we collected data by surveying classmates and organized results using frequency charts, bar graphs, and dot plots. We wrapped up the week with a fun unit review, taking part in a stem-and-leaf and dot plot relay race in teams. We finished our class read-aloud Fish in a Tree and spent time reflecting on its messages. In writing, students wrote diary entries from Ally’s perspective, imagining key moments from the story through her eyes. In PE, students were introduced to curling and worked on strategy, teamwork, and controlled movement. In heath, we learned about healthy relationships and types of peer pressure with ReStart!
