Weekly Update in 5D

We had an exciting and productive week of learning!

➕ Math — Coordinate Geometry

This week we continued exploring coordinate geometry. Students practiced using directional language (up, down, left, and right) to move along a grid and locate points accurately. On Tuesday, we transformed the entire classroom into a coordinate plane! In pairs, students took turns being blindfolded and used only their partner’s directional instructions to navigate to a checkpoint. This activity helped build clear communication skills, spatial reasoning, and confidence in using mathematical language.

Another highlight this week was our small-group work with graph paper. Students teamed up to plot the vertices of different polygons using ordered pairs. Once their shapes were drawn, groups practiced translating the entire shape on the grid—moving it up, down, left, or right while keeping the shape’s size and orientation the same. This helped students strengthen their understanding of coordinates, teamwork, and how shapes behave when they move across a plane.

✏️ Writing — Procedural Texts & “Show, Don’t Tell”
In Language Arts, we focused on two main writing skills:

  • Procedural Writing: Students practiced explaining how to do something step-by-step using clear, organized instructions. They could use words, pictures, or a combination.

Show, Don’t Tell: Throughout the week, we worked on adding vivid details to writing to help the reader picture what’s happening rather than simply being told.

On Thursday, students took on a challenge: creating a wordless comic (using only minimal dialogue or sound effects) to show a story without relying on text. This pushed them to think carefully about sequencing, expression, and visual storytelling.

✈️ Science — Forces of Flight

In Science, we continued learning about the four forces of flight: lift, weight, thrust, and drag. To explore how lift works, students conducted a simple experiment using only a sheet of paper. By blowing over the top edge of the paper, they observed how faster-moving air creates lower pressure, causing the paper to rise. This demonstration helped students connect real-world observations to the science behind how airplanes fly.

⚽ Physical Education — Soccer

In PE, we played soccer and focused on teamwork, communication, and simple game strategies. Students practiced passing with intention, positioning on the field, and supporting one another through play.

It was a wonderful week full of creativity, collaboration, and hands-on learning! See you next week 5D!
