Week of January 12 and 19!
The past two weeks have been full of learning, thinking, and creativity in our classroom and we have lots underway!
Social Studies:
Students debated the benefits of settling near rivers versus coastlines for ancient civilizations, considering factors like trade, food, safety, and transportation. To wrap up our geography unit, students have begun writing postcards from the perspective of someone living in an ancient civilization, describing the geographical features of their environment and how those features shaped daily life.
Physical Education:
Lately we have been working on our basketball skills, practicing shooting, dribbling, and layups. These foundational skills will help prepare us as we move into game play, teamwork, and strategy in the coming weeks.
Math:
We have wrapped up addition and subtraction and transitioned into a new unit on data and statistics. Students are beginning to learn how to collect, organize, and interpret data in meaningful ways.
Writing:
Our story writing unit has launched, and we are very lucky to have Mrs. Docherty drop in and teach writing in our class! Students are crafting engaging stories with detailed beginnings, middles, and ends. We are now on our second story using this picture prompt.
Science:
Continuing our learning about forces, we are now focused on buoyancy. Students conducted a float vs. sink experiment with classroom objects by making predictions, a hypothesis, testing objects, and discussing why some objects float while others sink.
Wellness and Social-Emotional Learning:
We also began a program called Restart, which focuses on emotions and self-regulation through interactive activities and discussion.
